New NEMA department established

27 November 2013, 19:47

Lagos - The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has created a new department as a part of efforts to strengthen community resilience against disasters.

The Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) department will harness resources towards the increase of local capacities at the grassroots.

“It is expected to enhance the structure and capacity of the Agency to address the increasing challenges of disasters in Nigeria,” NEMA media officer, Mazon Ezekiel, said.

Ezekile confirmed the Governing Council of NEMA, in conformity with the standards of the United Nations International office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), had approved the department.

Ezekiel added that through the new department, NEMA would pay more attention to the strengthening of volunteerism in disaster management, promote initiatives for partnership with international and local stakeholders to develop and implement programmes and activities that would identify hazards, reduce the risks and increase resilience in the communities.

“It will also serve the functions of enlisting the supports of external donors/development partners to strengthen national reduction capacities,” Ezekile stated.

He said other functions of the department include the coordination in development and implementation of the National Action plan for Disaster Risk Reduction in Nigeria, facilitate national institutional capacity building programmmes to address specific gaps of various stakeholders based on the results of baseline assessment and studies.

The new department is coming on board to reinforce the roles of the other existing departments including Search and Rescue, Training, Planning Research and Forecasting, Administration and Supplies as well as Finance and Accounts.
