New army division to fight terror

19 August 2013, 07:33

Abuja -The Nigerian Army has created a new division to counter Boko Haram insurgency operations in the north eastern parts of the country.

Brigadier General Chris Olukolade, Director of Information in the Army, said the division, codenamed Operation BOYONA, an acronym derived from the names of the three states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, would complement ongoing efforts to curb terror.

The three states are the hardest hit by the problem, culminating in the government declaring a state of emergency.

"The command of the ongoing internal security operations in the North East has entered a new phase as the control of the mission reverts to the Army Headquarters. Accordingly, a new army Division has been created and will take off to continue the counter-insurgency operation with immediate effect," Olukolade said in Abuja.

He said the development was in line with the mandate spelt out in the State of Emergency declaration by President Goodluck Jonathan, who is also Commander-in-Chief of the Army.

"The new Division is to continue with the conduct of counter-terrorists operations in the North East which comes under its Area of Responsibility," said Olukolade.

A General Officer Commanding (GOC), in the rank of Major General, is being proposed to command the new division which will have its headquarters in Maiduguri.
