30 October 2013, 08:30Augustine Osayande

Abuja - The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is ready to distribute 40 fire trucks in an initiative aimed at combating fire outbreaks in the region.

According to the Acting Managing Director of the Commission, Christy Atako, the commission would always work in synergy with the state governments and other agencies in addressing the developmental needs of the region.

“NDDC has a standard, and therefore makes sure that all its facilities, projects and programmes are done according to specification,” she said.

She said although the trucks were yet to be formally handed over to the state governments, officials of the fire service must ensure that they were properly maintained.

The trucks comprise water tankers of 30 000 litre capacity, turn table fire truck with a combination of water, dry chemicals and carbon dioxiode.

The Director of Akwa Ibom State Fire Service, Gwindolen Ukpe, thanked the commission for the gesture.

Rivers State Senior Fire Officer, Eng. Osah Maduaagwu, Senior Fire Officer also appreciated the donation.

“This gesture by NDDC is something worth appreciating. It will really enhance the response time to fire emergencies especially this coming festive season,” he said.
