Niger - The Director-General, Niger Pension Board, Yahaya Benu, said on Monday that the state government had spent N35 billion on pensions and gratuities since 2007 to date.Benu said government was already preparing to pay the final batch of 142 per cent pension arrears for retired civil servants on Grade Levels 7 to 17.In a statement in Minna, Benu said that the government had earlier disbursed N700 million for the arrears and was set to pay those on the senior cadre an additional N191 million. He said that the beneficiaries were those that retired from the service on or before March 2000 and possessed the original clearance slip issued by the screening committee set up by the board to verify their claims. Benu said government had made it a matter of policy to ensure regular payment of pensions, gratuities and contribution to the new contributory pension scheme. The director-general said with the N191 million, pension arrears amounted to N2.29 billion of inherited and unpaid retirement benefits since 2007. According to him, the timetable for the payment of the N191 million for retired senior civil servants has been sent to the secretariat of the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners for orderliness in the disbursement.
