Nigeria probes HIV funds discrepancies

28 June 2013, 10:00Emeka Adebanji

Abuja - Nigeria has instituted investigations into the management of funds meant to fund the battle against HIV/Aids in the country.

According to the Speaker of the House, Aminu Tambuwal, there is a need to check the activities of government and non-government organisations working in the area of HIV/Aids in order to enhance transparency and encourage donor partners to improve funding for the fight against the disease.

“This is not a witch hunt but a veritable duty of the parliament in its oversight functions as stipulated in our rules," Tambuwal said.

The speaker appealed to all stakeholders to cooperate with the committee.

The chairman of the house committee on HIV/Aids, tuberculosis, malaria and leprosy control, Joseph Kigbu, welcomed the investigation.

"The investigation is necessary because many private agencies working in the sector have remained faceless, while application of funds in the sector have become questionable," Kigbu said.

More than two percent of Nigeria's population of 160 million is living with HIV/Aids.
