Nigeria seeks Britain's assistance to fight terror

24 July 2013, 16:03

Abuja - Minister of State for Defence, Dr Erelu Obada, called for closer collaboration with Great Britain to combat such problems as crude oil theft and terrorism.

She made the appeal after hosting the British Minister of International Security and Strategy, Dr Andrew Murrison, who paid a courtesy visit in Abuja.

Erelu urged Britain to criminalise the trade in oil theft, a setback that was denying Nigeria significant revenue inflows.

She also requested for the full implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding after ratification by the Federal Executive Council.

The MoU aims to build an enduring Defence relationship that will contribute to the security of each party and enhance peace and security across the West African region based on equality and mutual respect.

Erelu called for a Public Private Partnership (PPP) collaboration to enhance the Nigerian defence sector.

She outlined some of the areas of cooperation as maintain maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, Cooperation in relation to the threats emerging from terrorism and insurgency as well as sharing knowledge and training in the fields of international peace keeping efforts.

Murrison said his country would assist Nigeria in enhancing peace and security in the region.
