Lagos - Nigeria has committed to the safety of its citizens by setting up a special task force to rid local markets of substandard products.
Government has ordered manufacturers and importers of all products on sale in the country to register the imports with the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) before the end of June.
SON Director General Joseph Odumodu, said the action will start from markets within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and its environs from June 5.
Odumodu said foreign manufacturers have turned Nigeria into a dumping ground for substandard products, especially electronics, some of which were a danger to users.
"We cannot condone sales of substandard products and those who do so will be prosecuted accordingly.
"A lot of people are losing money due to substandard products," he said.
