Abuja- About 9 000 Nigerians are currently in various prisons abroad mostly in the United Kingdom, a senior government official disclosed.
Foreign Affairs Minister, Olugbenga Ashiru, said the government is concerned at the welfare of these citizens, some who are facing death sentences.
He said there is a need to devise a strategy to proffer solutions to the alarming numbers of Nigerians in detention abroad.
According to Ashiru, there are 752 Nigerian prisoners in United Kingdom.
"One of the major challenges facing Nigeria’s foreign policy is the plight of Nigerians in prisons abroad. Most of them are concentrated in the Asian-Pacific with many of them on death row. Given these alarming numbers, it is an imperative need to find creative solutions to the plight of these Nigerians," Ashiru said.
Ashiru warned Nigerian citizens to stay away from drug trafficking.
Nigerians have a bad reputation as drug traffickers.
“Airport around the world are now sophisticated and secure. If you carry any drugs in your body or bags you will be caught.
"I appeal to Nigerians to desist from the practice. It tarnishes the image of our country,” said Ashiru.
