'No bomb explosion in Abuja'

05 February 2013, 07:36

Abuja - Mr Aderenle Shinaba, the Commmissioner of Police in the FCT, said there was no bomb explosion in any part of the territory contrary to rumours that there was a blast.

Shinaba was reacting to rumours making the round on Monday in Abuja that there was an explosion in front of the NIPOST office at Area 10, Garki, Abuja.

The commissioner told newsmen that what was rumoured as an explosion was the sound from a destruction carried out on a suspected bomb object by men of the Anti-Bomb Squad.

Shinaba said that following information received by the command on the object at about 10 a.m, men from the Explosive Ordnance Department (EOD) were dispatched to the scene.

"The true position is that there is no bomb anywhere in Abuja today, Monday.

"At about 10 a.m, we got information that there was something that was packaged in carton that looked like bomb at the gate of NIPOST in Area 10.

"And because of the security situation in the country generally, the people became apprehensive and were scared, so we had to move in promptly," he said.

The commissioner said that in order to avoid a similar incident in Kaduna where an explosion went off and killed a policeman, men of the anti-bomb squad examined the object first before destroying it.

"It was that noise of destruction that sent down shivers down the spine of most people and rumours flying in the air.

"At the end of the day, what we discovered was that it was a package containing sand as well as tiles, there was nothing to indicate that it had anything to do with any form of explosive.

"It had nothing to do with Improvise Explosive Device (IED)," he said.

Shinaba urged residents of the FCT as well as foreigners to go about their businesses, adding that there was no cause for alarm.
