No free electricity metres in Osogbo yet

16 February 2013, 07:10

Osogbo - The Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) in Osogbo says it has not received any official directive from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to suspend the distribution of pre-paid metres free of charge.

Timothy Adesanya, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the PHCN, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Osogbo on Friday, that the company had yet to get any directive from the commission to stop the free distribution of the metres to the public.

The commission had in June last year ordered all electricity distribution companies to instal prepaid metres for free to all consumers within their network within 18 months.
Barely 10 months later, the Chairman of the commission, Sam Amadi, rescinded that directive, and declared that electricity consumers should now pay for prepaid metres.

"We only heard about the suspension on the radio like everybody but the directive has not officially been given to us to that effect.

"Any official directive is always documented and issued as a form of circular for official execution, but we have received none of such by the government,'' he told NAN.

He said that when the plan by the Federal Government came last year to stop collecting money for pre-paid metres and that it  be given free of charge, it was officially communicated to the office  through a directive by NERC.

Adesanya, however, told NAN that the Osogbo PHCN had yet to receive the free metres, since the NERC announced the plan to distribute it to the public.
He said that any government directive officially communicated to them would be executed, in order to give PHCN customersthe best of service.
