Ogun Assembly threatens to sanction council officials

17 April 2014, 18:56

Abeokuta - The Ogun Assembly on Wednesday said any local government official who refused to answer an audit query would be sanctioned in line with public service rules.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts, Abiodun Akovonyon, stated this in Abeokuta while conducting a check on the 2012 audited account of local government councils in the state.

Akovonyon said that refusal to answer an audit query promptly would be a serious offence, adding that the check being conducted was not to witch-hunt anybody, but to put things right.

He urged the Auditor- General for Local Government, Mohammed Ogunleye, to take a second look at all the financial queries with a view to determining whether there were inflated contracts.

"There is an improvement from what happened in the 2011 auditors report and that of 2012 as only 14 out of the 20 local government in the state have one or two queries to answer," he said.

The lawmaker expressed the determination of the Assembly to ensure repayment of such funds into government’s coffers.

Also speaking, a member of the committee, John Obafemi, stressed the need for the career officers to give meaningful advice to the political appointees.

Obafemi also said that the local government officials should always follow due process in any project or programme they wanted to embark upon.

The local government councils in attendance included those of  Yewa North, Odogbolu, Sagamu and Abeokuta North.
