Abuja - Charles Okah, the brother of the convicted leader of the Movement for Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND), Henry, is alleging prison officials attempted to rape him in his cell in Abuja.
In a petition to the Comptroller General of Kuje Prison, lawyer to Okah, Festus Keyamo alleged that the two male prison senior officials and three warders tried to sodomise him.
The incident is alleged to have happened on July 3.
According to the lawyer, that morning, some prison warders -named as Isah Musa (the Chief Clerk),Tanko Gokuje, (the Assistant Yard Master)-and three other prison warders entered his client’s cell demanded to search him claiming he was he hiding ‘incriminating’ material in his private parts.
“Before entering his cell, they made sure all other inmates were locked up in their various cells. Having heard from other inmates in the past that this is a known pattern used by warders to sodomise inmates, our client initially resisted the attempt, but was forced to succumb after much pressure and insistence by the culprits.
"However, having succumbed, to the utter shock and dismay of our client, he saw that Isah Musa pulled off his clothes and sustained erection and attempted to carry out the acts of sodomy on him,” the petition read.
“To achieve this, our client was then held to the ground by Tanko Gokuje and three other warders. Our client had to intensify his struggle and resistance to prevent the completion of the criminal act. Our client screamed for help and this was heard by other inmates,” stated the lawyer.
Keyamo urged the prison bosses to urgently investigate the allegation and effect appropriate sanctions on the culprits.
Okah is currently standing trial before an Abuja Federal High Court over his alleged role in the Nigeria Independent Day bomb masterminded by his brother.
