Oyo Assembly passes environment bill

27 February 2013, 13:10 -

Oyo - The Oyo State House of Assembly has passed the Oyo State Environmental Protection Agency Bill 2013 to create a new agency in the Ministry of Environment .

The bill’s passage followed the presentation of the report of a committee at plenary by Hon. Sikiru Ali (ACN) and Chairman, House committee on Environment and Habitat.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the bill, if signed into law, would establish the Environmental Protection Agency.

The agency will have powers to arrest and prosecute individuals and corporate bodies which  engage in environmental pollution in the state.

The bill also prescribes stiffer punishment for those who failed to participate in sanitation exercises at state or national level.

In his report, Ali who represents Ibadan South East in the assembly said members had worked on the bill to make it more explicit for third reading and passage

The bill was subsequently considered at plenary by the committee of the whole House presided over by the Speaker, Hon. Monsurat Sunmonu.

The committee also effected necessary amendments before presenting the bill for third reading.

The bill, known as ``Oyo State Environmental Protection Agency Bill 2013’’ was then read for the third time and unanimously passed before the House adjourned till March 5.
