Abuja - First Lady, Patience Jonathan, mourned the passing of former Minister of Information and erstwhile Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Dora Nkem Akunyili.
Akunyili died on Saturday morning at an Indian hospital after a long battle with a cancer-related ailment.
She was 59.
Jonathan expressed shock and deep sadness at her death.
“The late former Minister of Information was a titan who leaves an indelible mark having served the nation with passion and conviction. Words cannot adequately express the shock and deep sadness felt,” said the First Lady.
She observed that the deceased demonstrated that given the opportunity, women could make a difference.
She said this was evident from her glowing career as an internationally renowned pharmacist, respected academic and distinguished administrator.
The First Lady prayed that the Almighty in his infinite mercy would grant her soul peaceful repose and console her immediate and extended family members.
“While we mourn her loss, we offer thanksgiving to God for her sojourn on this mortal earth and for her service to the nation and humanity.”
