Plateau NLC directs workers to begin strike

11 December 2012, 07:47

Plateau - The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Plateau has directed workers in the state to commence total strike on Dec. 11 in sympathy with their Local Government counterparts.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the council workers had been on strike since March to press for the payment of the N18, 000 national minimum wage.

This is contained in a statement signed by the state NLC Chairman, Mr Jubril Bancir, in Jos on Monday.

It stated that NLC and TUC attention had been drawn to a purported court order from the National Industrial Court, Abuja.

``Labour wishes to emphasise here that neither NLC/TUC headquarters nor the state council have been served the said court order.

``It has not equally been placed in any of the aforementioned offices of our affiliates or any quarter.

``We, therefore, call on all workers and the general public to remain resolute to the ongoing mobilisation.

``The strike will hold as planned on Dec. 11 after the expiration of the deadline of Dec. 10,’’ it stated.

NAN reports that both the Joint Task Force (JTF) and the police had in separate statements claimed that they were served with a court order, stopping labour from embarking on the strike.

They had insisted that it would be inimical to the rule of law for labour to insist on the strike in the face of the order and a blow to the fragile peace in the state.

However, both the JTF and the police assured of adequate security for law abiding citizens of the state.
