Makurdi - Two men, Shaapera Mark and Lubem Ahule, were on Tuesday arraigned before a Makurdi Magistrates’ Court over charges of armed robbery and unlawful possession of firearms.
The Police Prosecutor, Mr Patrick Sunday, told the court that one Titus Bebeni, the chairman of a vigilante group in Ushongo town in the Kwande Local Government Area of Benue, reported the case to the police.
Sunday said the complainant had stated that one Ephraim Iho reported to him that the suspects conspired and invaded his home and attacked him at gunpoint.
``They ordered him to bring all the money he had in his possession; when he resisted and wanted to grab them while shouting thieves, the robbers ran away.’’
He said that in the course of police investigations, the suspects voluntarily confessed to committing the crime.
``One locally made revolver pistol and one round of live ammunition were recovered from them,’’ he said.
When the case came up for mention, no plea was taken for want of jurisdiction.
The prosecution said that investigation into the matter was still in progress, and prayed the court for another date for mention.
He said the offence contravene Section 6(2), 2(1) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act Cap R11 Law of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
The Magistrate, Lilian Terseer-Tsumba, ordered the accused persons to be remanded in prison custody, pending the outcome of investigations.
She adjourned the case to Feb. 6, for mention.
