Police arraign student over alleged manslaughter

Lagos - A student, Onyebuchi Nwaebonyi, was on Tuesday arraigned in an Ebute Metta Chief Magistrates' Court, Lagos, over alleged manslaughter and reckless driving.

The accused, 21, who resides at No. 10, Fatiregun St., Ebute Meta, is facing trial on a five-count charge bordering on reckless driving, manslaughter and obstructing the highway.

The prosecutor, Insp. Cousin Adams, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Aug. 27, at Abule-Nla junction, along Apapa Road, Ebute Meta.

Adams alleged that the accused on the said day, drove his motorcycle in a reckless manner which caused the death of one Garuba Wasiu, a pedestrian.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 18, 19, and 20, Vol. 45 of the Lagos State Traffic Law 2012.

Adams said they also contravened Section 31 of RTA Cap. 126 Vol. 4, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Mrs O.A. Omisore, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties and adjourned the case till Sept. 15 for mention.
