Police arrests 7 homosexuals in Imo

18 January 2013, 14:06

Imo - The Imo State Police Command on Thursday confirmed the arrest of seven persons, suspected to be homosexuals in Ekwe Village in Umuaka in the Njaba Local Government Area of Imo.

The Public Relations Officer of the comand, Mr Virgilus Onugwu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Owerri that the suspects had made confessional statements.

Onugwu told NAN that the suspects would soon be charged to court for the offence which carries 14 years imprisonment on conviction.

He said that none of the suspects was lynched as widely rumoured.

The spokesman said that the suspects were arrested, following a quarrel between two of them, during which they accused each other of being homosexuals.

He also said that investigation had been stepped up for the arrest of those behind the killing of Mr Laz Anyanwu, the Director of Protocols in the deputy governor’s office.

Anyanwu was kidnapped in Owerri on Jan. 11, and later found dead on a bush path in Nworiebe in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state on Jan.14.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor, Sir Jude Agbaso, has visited the family of the deceased at Amaigbo in the Ikeduru Local Government Area to commiserate with the family members of the deceased.

Agbaso described the late director as a humble, hardworking, young man who exhibited commitment in the discharge of his duties.

The deputy governor told the family to bear the loss with fortitude, promising that the killers would be apprehended and brought to book.
