Police arrest 790 suspected robbers

10 January 2014, 14:13

Lagos - Mamman Tsafe, Asstant Inspector-General of Police in-charge of Zone 2, on Thursday said the command arrested 790 suspected armed robbers in 2013.

This was contained in a statement signed by the command's spokesman, SP Lewi Suleiman, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to him, the command recovered 568 guns and  5,399 live ammunitions in the zone, comprising Lagos and Ogun states.

The AIG said the successes achieved in the year under review were made possible with the confidence reposed on the command by members of the public.

Tsafe said that no fewer than 65 318 suspects were arrested for various offences and those found wanting under the law were prosecuted.

He said that 503 vehicles were snatched from their owners while 1166 vehicles stolen from different parts of the country were recovered from the hoodlums in zone.

"Seventy-six kidnappers and 280 cult members were arrested in various locations in the zone in the year.

"Rape cases totaling 158 were received while 101 were prosecuted after investigation with  57 of them awaiting DPP’s advice," Tsafe said.

The Police chief explained that some suspected robbers died in various encounters with police, adding that the zone also recorded few casualties.

He said that officers of the zone would improve in their crime prevention strategies, for better service delivery to the people of Lagos and Ogun states in 2014.

Tsafe urged members of the public for more support, promising to make 2014 a more peaceful year in the zone.
