Police arrest alleged killers of Kano lawmakers

03 January 2013, 11:08 -

Kano - The Police Command in Kano State has arrested a man suspected to have sponsored the killing of two members of the state legislature.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that one of the legislators, Garba Garko, was killed on Nov. 17, 2012, while the other, Alhaji Danladi Kademi, was murdered on Dec. 14, 2012 by unidentified gunmen.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Ibrahim Idris, told newsmen in Kano on Wednesday that the suspect was arrested after the arrest of the principal suspect in the murder of Kademi. Idris said the suspect, who confessed to have physically participated in the attack and shooting of the two legislators, was arrested on Dec. 24 following a tip-off. ‘’During interrogation he confessed to have joined the gang of the hired killers and that they were sponsored for the killing of the two legislators,’’ he said.

Idris said the suspects bargained to assassinate the lawmakers at the cost of N100, 000 out of which they were given N30, 000.

He said investigation revealed that the name and GSM contact number of the alleged sponsor were found in the alleged prime suspect’s telephone set, which showed different call logs between the two. ‘’Effort is in top gear to arrest other fleeing suspects,’’ the commissioner said.

He also said the police also arrested three suspected members of a terrorism gang, who made telephone calls to their victims and demanded huge amounts from them or to kill them. ‘’They also sent threat messages to wealthy individuals and politicians in Kano and Borno States,’’ the commissioner said.

He said the suspects would soon be prosecuted.
