Police arrests robbery suspects in Akure

11 July 2012, 09:23

The police in Ondo State has arrested  some suspected armed robbers, the command’s  spokesman, ASP Adeniran Aremu, has said.

Aremu said on Tuesday that a suspect  was on Monday in Owo nabbed  on his way to Akure.

He said the suspect was  caught  by members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers  while attempting to board a vehicle at a motor park.

When the suspect’s bag was searched, he said  two assault rifles, masks, black clothes and a big torch light  were found.

He said the suspect, who  was  handed over to men of the State Anti-robbery Squad (SARS), disclosed  that  his gang's  hide out was in Ehime, Kogi.

Aremu said that the police later arrested  a member of the gang with a pistol, army camouflage, 750 AK-47 ammunitions, 25 brownie ammunitions, 25m Akarov ammunition and 17 Berretta ammunition.

He said that the Kogi command had identified the two assault rifles as its property, adding  that the gang members killed two policemen recently in the state.

Other items recovered from the suspects included five handsets, one Olympus camera, three wrist watches, two ID cards, N73,005.00, one black beret and two laptops.

He said that the suspects would soon be charged to court.

Rumoured robbery attacks had forced many banks  to close their gates, leaving open only the pedestrian entrance for customers.
