Police arrest woman for allegedly stealing day-old baby

13 March 2015, 08:39Zubairu Idris

Katsina - The Police Command in Katsina said it arrested a 25-year-old woman for allegedly stealing a day-old baby at a health centre in Funtua Local Government Area.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Aminu Sadiq, told the newsmen in Katsina on Thursday that the incident occurred three days ago.

Sadiq said the mother of the baby, Binta Nuhu (24) delivered the baby girl and remained at the centre for further medical care.

He said that the suspect was also on admission and her bed space was close to Nuhu in the same ward.

The police spokesman said that the suspect deceived Nuhu’s sister under the pretext of observing the Morning Prayer around 6.a.m.

He said the suspect, however, refused to pray rather she returned, took  the nursing mother to a toilet, sneaked back into the ward and took the baby.

Sadiq said that the hospital management reported the case to the police and the suspect was traced to Danja town, arrested the woman and recovered the baby.

He said that suspect had told the police that she delivered the baby.

Sadiq said the baby had been returned to the mother and that the woman would be prosecuted after investigation.
