Police arrests 7 over Emir's assassination bid

Kano - The Kano State Police Command has arrested seven suspects and declared eight others wanted over the recent assassination attempt on the Emir of Kano,  Ado Bayero.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Malam Ibrahim Idris, made the disclosure on Monday in Kano.

“The profiles of the wanted persons had already been forwarded to InterPol.”

According to him, the details will facilitate their arrest across the borders.

He said the arrest of one Adamu Sani ,35, of Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State at the scene of the attack had led to the arrest of the six others.

The commissioner also said that Salisu Mohammed and Mubarak Isa of Unguwa Uku Quarters; Hashimu Ado of Rimin Kebe Quarters; Surajo Salisu; Mohammed Auwal Hashim, an indigene of Sokoto State and AbdulJalil Musa MaiShayi, an indigene of Katsina State were wanted persons.

The commisioner said that Sani had “ confessed to have participated in the attack on the Emir`s motorcade and so many other co-ordinated attacks in the state”.

The suspect listed some of the previous attacks he was involved in as the killing of policemen at `Yan Awaki Quarters, Tishama, Kwanar Freedom as well as the razing of primary schools at Gayawa and Sharada among others.

The commissioner said that among the eight wanted persons were Sherif Mohammed Gali, the Chief Imam of Filin Cashew Mosque at Unguwa Uku in Kano identified as the leader of the group.

Idris named another prime suspect as Babangida Baba Salihu, a Jigawa indigene, residing at Sauna Quarters.

He added that Salihu was a trader in Sabongari Market and was an official of the National Hajj Commission in 2010.

The suspect is being linked to several acts of terror as well as armed robberies.

The other wanted persons include one Ibrahim, a trader at GSM Market along Abdullahi Bayero road in Kano; one Adamu and one Salmanu, described as the group`s armourer all indigenes of Jigawa.

The others are Ali Unguwa Uku; Ali Naibawa and Habibu Gwammaja, all said to be Islamic scholars in their respective quarters.

The police commissioner urged the public to offer useful information that would lead to the arrest of the wanted suspects.

NAN recalls that Bayero's motorcade was attacked by gunmen on January 19, 2013 on its way from a Qur'anic recitation competition held at the Murtala mosque in Kano City.
