Police foil bank robbery in Aba

29 April 2013, 11:08

Abia- The police in Aba, Abia, have foiled a bank robbery attempt, killing one of the robbery suspects, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The Commissioner of Police in Abia, Alhaji Usman Mohammed, who confirmed the incident, told NAN that the robbery was foiled as the gang broke into the bank, located on Asa Road.

Mohammed said that the robbers came at about 2 a.m. and attempted to force their way into the banking hall when policemen  promptly stopped them.

He said that one of the robbers was gun down while others escaped.

The Aba Area Police Commander, Rabiu Dayi, who visited the scene also confirmed the incident.

Dayi told NAN that 17 expended shells of AK 47 riffle, a master key and a mobile phone handset were recovered at the scene of the crime.

“They were said to be six but one of them was shot dead while others fled when they noticed the heavy presence of policemen,” he said.

Anari Anari, the Officer in-Charge of the Police Command’s Anti-robbery Unit, appealed to the public to provide useful information on the fleeing robbers.

Anari said that the commercial city and its environs were no longer safe for criminal activities.
