18 July 2013, 16:21

Abuja - A suspect was killed in a shootout with Anambra police while 18 other suspects, including a teenager, were arrested for a spate of murders and robberies in the state.

Another suspect sustained bullet wounds during the operation at Ngborokpo village in Anaocha Local Government Area.

Emeka Chukwuemeka the Anambra Police Public Relations Officer said the suspects are also linked to the murder of an elderly man in Awgbu community and a woman at Nanka four days ago as well as a series of rapes in the state.

Among items police recovered during the arrests included assault rifles, pump action guns, locally-made pistols, live ammunition, a television set and a number of handguns.

Chukwuemeka said the gang allegedly committed the crimes on major roads, which they blocked in Nawfia, Awgbu, Ufuma, Abba, among other areas where and robbed people of their belongings.

The 16-year-old suspect, whose name cannot be released as he is a minor, confessed to some of the crimes.
It emerged he had dropped out of school after his parents could not afford to raise school fees and was introduced into the gang by a friend.
The suspects will appear in court soon.
