Borno - Borno State Police have opened investigations into the death of a member of the youth vigilante group at the hands of an officer.
Usman Ibrahim Janto was allegedly shot dead after heated argument with the officer.
The resultant shooting led to a riot as youth to burn down the police headquarters in Maiduguri. The youth who barricaded major roads in the troubled town, had the convoy of the governor stopped for over 40 minutes.
The accused police officer is recovering in hospital following the violence that ensued.
Borno State Police Commissioner, Lawal Tanko, said a probe had been opened.
He said the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the State Police Command would investigate the killing.
However, the CID was waiting on the alleged trigger-happy officer to recuperate before he faces the probe.
“The police officer is critically injured and receiving treatment and the need to want on him to make a statement. We pray for him to survive so that we can take proper action and avoid any future occurrence. We have been talking to our officers to strictly adhere to the rule on when fire arms are allowed to be used,” said Tanko.
Tanko insisted that if the officer that killed the youth is found guilty he will be dismissed from the Police and equally made to face criminal prosecution.
