Police quell communal crises in Benue

Makurdi - The Police Command in Benue said that it had quelled communal crisis between Utange and Mbayion communities in Katsina -Ala Local Government Council of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Daniel Ezeala, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Makurdi, said the Anti-Riot Squad of the command crushed the uprising Tuesday night.

Ezeala said the two-day crisis claimed six lives, while 10 houses were burnt and property worth millions of Naira destroyed.

The police image maker, who said that the command had commenced investigation into the crisis, appealed to the warring communities to embrace peace.

NAN learnt that the crisis broke out following a misunderstanding between a member of Utange and his counterpart form Mbayion.

Eyewitnesses further told NAN that the crisis led to the death of a prominent member of the Mbayion community.

They added that reprisal attacks led to more deaths, destruction of houses as well as property

NAN reports that the State House of Assembly had, on Tuesday, directed the Commissioner of Police to draft more security personnel to the area to bring the situation under control.
