Police seizes 32 motorcycles in Abia

22 February 2013, 16:02

Abia- The Police in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia, said they arrested 10 persons and seized 32 motorcycles for flouting the ban on the use of the vehicle in the town and Umuahia.

The Police Area Commander, Mr Rabiu Dayi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Aba that it was an offence for residents to ride motorbike in the city, adding that anyone caught would be prosecuted.

He said that following renewed upsurge in the rate of kidnapping in Aba, a team of policemen was mobilised and it raided the area and arrested the suspects.

``Recently we have observed that kidnapping has come back to the city and the information we get is that they (kidnappers) use motorcycles.

``In response to that, we decided to raid the areas where Okada riders operate,” he said, adding that the police would not spare anybody, including policemen who flout the ban.

``Since the law did not say policemen should not obey it, if any policeman disobeys the ban, he will be arrested.

``If the policeman is linked with kidnapping, we will dismiss and prosecute him,” Dayi said.

The commander said that those arrested would be charged to court while the seized motorcycles would be auctioned.

NAN recalled that following the upsurge in kidnapping in the state, particularly Aba and Umuahia, Gov. Theodore Orji  ordered the ban on the use of motorcycles.

In spite of the ban, some people, particularly security men, still use motorcycles in Aba.
