Police unearth illegal arms depot

04 July 2013, 16:45

Abuja - Imo police have arrested two brothers in connection with the discovery of an illegal firearms depot and some police equipment.

It is alleged the ammunition and arms were brought from Turkey and although they were initially licensed, the licence had been revoked in 1982.

The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Katsina, confirmed the discovery and subsequent arrests.

He said it was the biggest discovery Imo police had ever made.

It was through information that the Police Ambush Squad received that made them to storm his house and recovered over 13 pump action rifles, 750 live cartridges, one carton of security torch lights and a bullet proof jacket with the “Nigeria Police” inscription and bearing the initials of the Imo State Police Commissioner,” he said.

The weapons were allegedly sold to suspected criminals in Imo State.

Katsina urged citizens to surrender illegal weapons or risk prosecution.

“The command has reconstituted illegal arms mopping squad to deal with the high level of arms proliferation in the state,” he said.
