Akwa Ibom - The spat between the All Progressives Congress and the People’s Democratic Party over the governorship elections and the recent invasion of the Akwa Ibom Government House has continued with the latter lashing at the ruling party’s spokesperson for comments he reportedly made regarding the issues.
PDP State Chairman, Obong Paul Ekpo accused the APC spokesman, Lai Mohammed, of assuming the role of spokesperson for the Department of State Service (DSS) and commenting on issues that were subjudice.
DSS raided the Government House recently, months after a contentious election whose validity a poll tribunal is assessing.
Ekpo said the attention of his party had been drawn to a press conference Mohammed addressed during which he faulted the recent solidarity visit of the national leadership of the PDP to Akwa Ibom State.
“During the said press conference, Lai Mohammed, well known for his garrulous and characteristic loose-tongue, also delved into the Akwa Ibom Governorship Elections petition, by making unfounded and baseless statements, in a flagrant display of arrogance, in a matter which is subjudice,” said Ekpo.

“Whereas, the Akwa Ibom PDP would have preferred to ignore the rantings of the APC spokesman as he has established notoriety for babbling, we have decided to make this rejoinder so that the unsuspecting members of the public are not misinformed or deceived, especially in this season which the APC engages in distorting and twisting facts to cause sheer mischief and score cheap political points.”
Ekpo said Mohammed justification of the DSS invasion was a vindication of the PDP’s suspicion the APC was behind the plot to effect a “political hounding” in Akwa Ibom state.
He nonetheless expressed his party’s support for the governor.
“We wish to express absolute confidence in the leadership of His Excellency Governor Udom Emmanuel and commend him for the accomplishments so far recorded, and we call on well-meaning Nigerians to continue to support the Governor, especially in his quest to industrialize the state, create wealth and expand infrastructure for the benefit of the people.”
