Rivers State reclaims dormant properties

20 August 2013, 15:26

Abuja - The Rivers State Government has directed the sealing off of the premises of the moribund Amalgamated Distilleries Company Limited in Port Harcourt.

Officials said this was part of broader moves to reclaim properties that individuals and companies had unlawfully occupied.

Rivers State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Chima Chinye, said sealing off Amalgamated Distilleries Company Limited had become necessary following the refusal by the occupants of the place to comply with government’s directive to relocate.

Chinye, who gave the repossession order after inspecting the premises, said the government intended to recover the properties and put them into optimal use for the benefit of the entire people of the state.

“Government is poised to ensure the return of sanity as regards the use of government properties in the state. Sealing off the company’s premises has not ordered out of malice but to enable interested investors to invest on the property,” Chinye said.

Amalgamated Distilleries Company is a state government company that has been moribund for over 20 years. At its site in at Trans-Amadi industrial layout in Port Harcourt, machines and other infrastructure are lying fallow.
