Rivers sponsors thousands for annual pilgrimage

25 September 2013, 14:31Augustine Osayande

Abuja – The Rivers State Government will this year sponsor more than 2 000 Christians for the annual pilgrimage to Israel.

The Executive Director Rivers State Pilgrims Board, Rev. John Wangbu, revealed this at a press briefing in his office in Port Harcourt where he said impersonators would not be allowed to breach the gesture of goodwill.

Wangbu claimed no state had been able to match the number of pilgrims from Rivers State, adding that his board was reaching out to corporate bodies and well to do individuals in churches to assist in sponsoring pilgrims in the region.

“I have also published a book to aid the pilgrims to know where they are going to visit,” he said.

He said majority of the pilgrims that will benefit from the sponsorship are from the rural areas and preparing them, has been a big challenge.

Wangbu added the board had eliminated chances of impersonators as well as couples travelling together on state expense.

He said such incidents had been reduced to the “barest minimum.”

“People must know that the journey is a spiritual one and not a shopping galore,” said Wangbu.
