SSS arrests 4 suspected certificate syndicate

02 May 2013, 09:16

Umuahia- The State Security Service (SSS) in Abia on Wednesday said that it arrested four persons impersonating officials of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).

The SSS Director, Mathew Obodoechi, told newsmen in Umuahia that the suspects claimed that they were attached to Federal Teachers Scheme (FTS) and deployed to Abia.

Obodoechi said that the suspects were arrested between April 25 and 27.

He alleged that the suspects issued fake certificates and defrauded their victims of millions of naira.

He said that during interrogation, one of them confessed to committing the crime.

The suspect said he originated the selling of fake forms used for UBEC job request and federal teachers’ scheme participation undertaking form.

The SSS director said no fewer than 300 forged certificates and 250 fake forms were recovered at the suspect’s hideout.

``The suspects were arrested and during investigation, they were traced to No. 35, Pond Road Aba, where they use as their office.

``The suspects will first administer oath on the victims and thereafter asked them to pay N5 000 for the oath.

``After the oath, the victim will be made to pay N6 000 as ``Help Him Pass Exams'', N20 000, if he or she wants NECO result.

``The victim, who wants NCE certificate will be made to pay N30 000 and N50,000 for anyone who wants job,’’ he said.

Obodoechi urged the state government to verify certificates presented by public workers.

He said the level of damage already done in the system was enormous.

He also said his men arrested four others who allegedly swindled seven foreigners of an undisclosed amount.

The SSS director said the syndicate was caught with laptops, GSM phones and other documents.

Obodoechi alleged that the syndicate had collaborators who are based in Malaysia.

He said that investigations into the two cases had been concluded.

Obodoechi said that the suspects would soon be charged to court.
