Sacked workers of NIMC protest again

20 February 2013, 11:03

Abuja - Some former workers of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), on Tuesday protested against their sack, and blocked the entrance into the National Assembly complex.

During the protest, many legislators and workers were locked out.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that at least 4 000 workers of the Commission were reportedly sacked in 2012 allegedly for inability to meet up with a six-year period of grace given to them to acquire university education.

A security officer at the gate told NAN on condition of anonymity, that the protesting workers arrived at  the complex as early as 7 a.m. before workers of the assembly resumed duty.

They, however, refused to talk to newsmen, saying that the media had not treated them fairly.

Tuesday’s protest is the third in the last three months that the sacked workers would be staging a protest at the assembly complex.

On Feb. 6 this year, the House of Representatives appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to prevail on the Federal Civil Service Commission to re-absorb the former workers into other ministries, departments and agencies.
