Abuja - At least 15 people have been killed after unknown gunmen attacked the Nyakwala village of Gidin-Doruwa in Wukari Local Government Council of the Taraba State.
The attack came a day after Acting Governor; Alhaji Garba Umar, visited the palace of the monarchs of Wukari and Ibi to express his dismay over the recent crisis. The attacked began during the early hours of Esther Sunday.
According to witness accounts, over 52 houses have been razed down completely and lots of corpses are littered on the streets in recent days.
“The situation here is so bad now that some of the security personnel have decided to withdraw for safety, but they claimed it is for reinforcement.
"Those of us that are strong enough, have managed to escaped from the area but our aged ones especially the women and the children, many of them were trapped there, so I believed the numbers of casualties would at the end of the day exceed that figures,” a witness said.
Confirming the reports, the Divisional Secretary of the Red Cross Society of Nigeria, Lucky Navokhi, said there was an eruption of crisis in the area.
“There is crisis and the fight is still on. So we don’t have any record or information to make public now,” he added.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Joseph Kwaji, also confirmed police were aware of the ongoing attacks in the area but noted that he was yet to reach out to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the area for proper briefing.
He said a large numbers of policemen had been deployed to the area.
“Our men have been moved to the area and they are enough to contain the situation there.”
He added that the 34 squadron from Gombe State as well as the 14 squadron from Yola in Adamawa State had been moved to Wukari to restore normalcy.
State commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Atte Sale Kundu, felt sad that in spite of the Acting Governor’s appeal to the people to sheath their swords, they had refused to embrace peace.
“We don’t know where the problem is coming from, the acting governor has made it possible for the immediate deployment of two units of anti-riot policemen from the neighbouring states of Gombe and Adamawa,” he said.
