Senate requests Jonathan returns original Bill

16 April 2015, 18:28

Abuja -  The Senate has requested President Goodluck Jonathan to return the original copy of the Constitutional Amendment Bill it earlier sent him.

The request at plenary follows a motion by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, that the original copy of the bill be returned.

“We at the Senate Committee observed that the Original copy of the fourth alteration Act 2015 have not be returned to the Senate as indicated in the (letter sent) to the President," said Ekweremadu.

"As such we are asking the Senate to ask the President to returned the original copy of the bill that was sent to him back to the Senate," he added.

When the Senate President, David Mark, put the matter to voting, legislators unanimously supported it.

President Jonathan in a letter addressed to the Senate President remitted the bill back to the Senate on the grounds that there was no evidence the Act satisfied the strict requirement of section 9 sub section 3 of the 1999 Constitution.

Senate argued Jonathan failed to accompany his letter vetoing the bill with original copy of the bill sent to him for assent by the National Assembly.

The Senate Committee has temporarily suspended the retreat until it is in possession of the original copy of the amended bill.

Among other things, the amendment had approved life pension for anybody who has ever held the office of President or Vice President, Senate President or Deputy Senate President, Speaker or Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
