Sokoto - Sokoto State Commissioner for Environment, Jabbi Kilgori, said the government had introduced community-based approaches to prevent blockade of water ways.
Kilgori told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto that the measures would enable the people to evacuate dirt from water ways to prevent flooding in the state.
He said that the measure would also enable people of the state to stop the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in water ways.
He said government had taken concrete measures to prevent the menace of flooding through sensitisation to the dangers of dumping of refuse.
Kilgori also solicited for the support of traditional rulers and development associations by mobilising people on the need to embark on self-help efforts.
He said the approach would enable people to clear their surroundings for easy passage of water.
