Sokoto declares Thursday a public holiday

15 October 2015, 06:45Augustine Osayande

Abuja - The Sokoto State Government has declared Thursday a public holiday to mark the beginning of new Islamic year.

The development follows the announcement of the New Islamic Year by the Sultanate Council.

Malam Imam Imam, the spokesman to Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, congratulated Nigerian Muslims for witnessing the New Year and appealed to them to use the occasion of the public holiday to intensify prayers for the nation.

“Following announcement by the Sultanate Council on the New Islamic Year, Sokoto State Government has declared tomorrow, Thursday, October 15, 2015 (Muharram, 1, 1437) AH, as a public holiday,” Imam said.

He urged all citizens to care, love and protect one another, adding that every member should promote Islamic virtues of unity, peace and honesty.

Imam said the Sokoto state government would continue with policies and programmes that would uplift the dignity and living standard of all persons.

He equally commiserated with the families of the citizens of the state who either got injured or lost their lives in the Hajj stampede last  month when hundreds died.

Imam reiterated government's commitment to assist families of all victims, saying no victim would be left unattended to.

He prayed for a prosperous Islamic New Year for all citizens.
