Steel company closed over safety issues

01 October 2015, 11:46Augustine Osayande

Abuja - Lagos State Government's Safety Service Commission has suspended work at Hongxing Steel Company Limited over safety issues.

The company, situated at Amuwo Odofin area, allegedly violated safety rules, which recently resulted in  the death of a casual worker, Emeka Umoh.

The Director General of the Commission, Fouad Oki, gave the order during a working visit to the company following the publication of the death.

He described the working condition as deplorable.

Oki noted that a safety audit of the whole company that was earlier  conducted by the commission team showed management put inadequate safety measures in place.

"The Commission had no option but to give the directive due to the harsh and totally unacceptable working condition of the work place," Oki said.

Public Relations Manager of the company, Uche Eke, said the closure of the company would serve as a notice to the management to improve workplace safety measures.

He said the death of Eke was unfortunate.
