Striking LUTH doctors suspend action

07 December 2012, 16:07

Lagos - Doctors at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, on Friday suspended their three day-warning strike embarked upon to seek a review of their taxes.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the doctors, under the aegis of Association of Resident Doctors (ARD),  had on Tuesday  embarked on the  strike.

NAN checks  at the hospital showed that essential medical services had resumed  at the hospital following the suspension of the doctors’ action.

Prof. Akin Osibogun, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, confirmed that the doctors had suspended the strike.

Osibogun  told NAN  that the management was already holding discussions with the resident doctors.

"The hospital management with the Lagos State Tax Authority have started holding meetings with the doctors so they can get the necessary clarification on what the tax law says.

"Tax is a question of law, law passed by the National Assembly;  as law abiding citizens, we should comply with what the law says and implement it," he said.

An executive of the association, who pleaded anonymity, said that the executives had held meetings with the management on the need to  stop the deductions.

``There was a new tax regime in which over 20 per cent was being deducted monthly from our salaries as tax and this  is quite a lot of money.

``We have met with the management severally, but they told us it was not a LUTH management decision and that it was a Federal Government Tax Law,’’ the executive said.

Olatunji Adenekan, the President of the association, when contacted, however, declined to comment.
