17 December 2014, 11:05Augustine Osayande

Abuja - The joint task force in the Niger Delta has arrested four suspects and seized a boat containing substances suspected to be stolen crude oil.

Media Coordinator of the task force, Col. Mustapha Anka, disclosed the seizure.

He said the vessel was seized on the Igbematoru Waterway in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area in Bayelsa.

Anka added that the four suspects on board the vessel were currently undergoing preliminary investigation while the barge was anchored at Igbematoru House Boat in the creeks.

The spokesman said the troops also discovered and destroyed two illegal refineries operated by oil thieves on the Tuomo and Chanomi West communities in Burutu and Warri South local government areas in Delta.

Anka said the troops, following a tip off, raided Ekraka village in Ethiope East and recovered two locally-made guns loaded with live cartridges.

The suspects reportedly abandoned their weapons and fled on sighting the troops, he added.

The joint task force has embarked on the Operation Pulo Shiled to rid the Niger Delta of illegal oil dealings.
