Taraba House appeals to Federal Govt for security

23 April 2014, 20:52

Abuja - Taraba State House of Assembly has asked the Federal Government to urgency take over the security situation in the state.

It said government should intervene" as a matter of urgency."

According to the lawmakers, the State Executive has failed in its responsibility of protecting lives and properties of the people.

The lawmakers are also worried that the ongoing killing in the state especially in the southern parts which they say was now spreading to the central zone of the state.

A joint motion co-sponsored by seven members from the zone, argued that in spite of the resources available to the state, the executive arm of the government failed to act positively to prevent the wanton killings going on in the areas.

Mark Useni pushed the motion under matter of urgent public importance.

The motion was co-sponsored by the speaker, Josiah Sabo Kente, former speaker, Haruna Istifanus Gbana, Mark Useni, Daniel Ishaya Gani, Daniel Tsokwa, Mohammed Abdulkarim and Yohanna Iratsi Adaki.

Members unanimously welcomed the motion that directed the executive arm of the government to request “the immediate takeover of the security situation in the affected areas by the federal government to safeguard lives and properties.”

It also stressed the need for the Executive to direct, “the appropriate agency of government to resuscitate all vigilante groups in the state so that they will assist security agencies in intelligence gathering and other security networking”

Useni who was visibly dejected said “I read with a heavy heart because of the ongoing event in southern Taraba and some parts of the state. The situation is a very bad one. Attackers have invaded our lands and they have made the people of our communities mere preys in their hands.
These communities are being visited by the attackers on daily bases.”

“We are of the view that the federal government must come in because it appears that lip service is being paid by the Executive arm.”

Also speaking, the only female member of the House, Rashidat Abdullahi, who aligned her weight behind the motion narrated a pathetic story on how women have suddenly became widows in the state.

“As a result of the ongoing crisis, a lot of women have lost their husbands and their children are asking of the where about of their fathers”.

The Speaker, Josiah Sabo Kente, directed the Clerk of the House to immediately draw the attention of the Acting Governor to the motion by sending enough relief materials to the affected local government councils for onward distribution.
