18 July 2013, 16:21

Abuja - More than 40 children from disadvantaged backgrounds in Takum will benefit from scholarships the Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, Haruna Tsokwa, has awarded.

Tsokwa said through the gesture, he was fulfilling pledges he made during the last general election when he promised to give back to the

"I decided to take this responsibility upon myself because of the promises I made to alleviate the sufferings of our people when given the mandate to represent them in the state House of Assembly. Education is the bedrock of any civilizes society.  "I decided to focus on education because without sound education, society would not grow."

The speaker, who also represents Takum in the House of Assembly, said he was working on a project that would culminate in citizens accessing free healthcare.

Locals have raised concern at the rising costs of healthcare.

However some patients have benefitted from the state's health foundation initiative, which foots their hospital bills.

Tsokwa was elected the new Speaker in April after the impeachment of Haruna Gbana.
