23 September 2013, 09:28Okoro Chinedu

Lagos - Gunmen have shot dead prominent journalist Anthony Kago outside his home in Nairobi.

Police said the assailants had laid ambush outside the home of the Nation Media Group Ongata Rongai on Sunday night.

He is said to have called his wife instructing her to open for him as he approached the gate only to be ambushed by the armed men who shot him on the shoulder at a close range through the car window.

His guard was stabbed on the chest as he ran to Kago’s rescue and is fighting for his life in hospital.

“The thugs robbed him (Kago) of his wallet and phones. He was later rushed to The Nairobi Womens Hospital where he was pronounced dead,” said the Ongata Rongai Officer Commanding Police Division.

The killing comes barely a week after a prominent advocate was shot dead in Bungoma County prior to the hearing of an election petition in which he was representing the a petitioner in the case.

The country has been experiencing a wave of crime in the recent past with the government pledging to deal firmly with the issue of insecurity in the country.
