Katsina -The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized and destroyed what is suspected to be chopped monkey meat in Katsina State.
The meat was seized at the Katsina State border in collaboration with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) officials.
Confirming the reports, the Controller of Customs in charge of Federal Operations, Maina Suliemani, said the 351 sacks of meat weighing about 100 kilograms each were seized from a truck with a foreign registration number plate.
Sulieman added that efforts to seize the vehicle with the meat by officials of the NCS was resisted as the driver had ran into town and mobilised thugs to frustrate the effort.
He said that the cultprits were dispelled after reinforcement came and shots were fired into the air to dispel them.
He charged officials of the NCS not to only collect revenue but to safeguard lives and health of the people.
Sulieman, said the meat had to be quickly destroyed due to the health challenge it could pose.
He said the seizure became necessary in view of the Ebola disease.
NAFDAC and other related agencies had taken samples to determine meats' state.
The State Governor, Ibrahim Shema,, said the seizure showed commitment of the agencies in addressing the challenge of smuggling and related vices.
He said the health of people is something that could not be compromised.
He urged agencies to check influx of items that have health implications on people.
