Abuja - The Census Tribunal on Tuesday validated the 2006 enumeration figures for three local government areas in Kano state, as released by the National Population Commission (NPC).
A judgment delivered by Tribunal `A’ validated the census figures of Kabo, Kano Municipal and Kibiya local government areas.
In the lead judgment read by the Chairman, Mr Abraham Yisa, the tribunal validated the figures on the grounds that the complainants, failed to provide enough evidence to back up their claims.
The tribunal said the complainants had failed to prove their claims of non enumeration of some of their localities.
It held that the complainants also failed to prove their case on the preponderance of evidence as the identities of persons they alleged that they were not enumerated were not disposed before the tribunal.
It further held that the testimonies of witnesses called by the complainants were based on hearsay as they all claimed they were enumerated.
According to the tribunal, the names of persons that the complainants alleged were not enumerated, did not reflect in their complaints neither did they appear before the tribunal to testify.
``The complainants challenged the respondent before the tribunal that some of their households were not enumerated during the 2006 census.
``Names of households and persons they alleged not enumerated did not reflect in their complaints. The tribunal, after considering the arguments of the complainants and the respondents, holds that the complainants failed to prove their case on preponderance of evidence.
`` The witnesses that testified before the tribunal from the three councils were not directly affected as they based their testimonies on hearsay.
``The tribunal, therefore, declares that the population figures of the local governments areas are valid,’’ Yisa said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the local government areas earlier filed separate petitions challenging the population figures declared for them by NPC.
In their petitions, they alleged that some of their households were not enumerated and prayed the tribunal to order for enumeration of those areas left out.
The NPC, however, declared the population figures of Kabo as 153,158, Kibiya as 138,618 and Kano Municipal as 371,243
