Truck crushes man to death

17 October 2012, 13:15

Ogun - A middle-aged man, Akeem Olubodun, was on Wednesday morning crushed to death by an articulated truck loaded with granite in the Adatan area of Abeokuta.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who visited the scene of the accident, reports that the truck, marked LAGOS XW 522 JJJ, was immediately set ablaze by an angry mob.

NAN learnt that the deceased  missed his steps as he tried to climb down from the vehicle after attempting to extort money from the driver.

``He is an Area Boy, and was trying to collect money from the driver but as he was coming down he missed his steps and fell on the tyre.

``He was dragged on the road for some distance because the driver was unaware of the fall. As you can see, his intestine is out and his head broken to pieces,’’  some people in the crowd said.

The people called on the government to look into the activities of  ``Area Boys`` and caution drivers against recklessness.

Police officers from the Adatan Division who arrived after the accident made efforts to contact the state Fire Service to extinguish the fire.

NAN reports that touts usually stop drivers of trucks conveying granite through the area and extort money from them.
