US decries incessant Boko Haram terror

14 July 2015, 10:51 Okoro Chinedu

Lagos - The United States has condemned the recent terror attacks the Boko Haram sect has carried out in Nigeria and neighbouring countries.

John Kirby, Department Spokesperson, said his country strongly denounced the indiscriminate Boko Haram suicide attack on the Grand Marche in the Chadian capital of N’Djamena on Saturday,as well as attacks in Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria over the past few days.

“The Boko Haram’s targeting of men, women, and children highlights that the group’s brutality and barbarism knew no bounds, and the US remains committed to working closely with the region to root out the threat posed by the group,” Kirby stated.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the soldiers, government officials, and civilians killed; we hope those who were injured will recover quickly.”

He praised the security forces of Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria for their timely responses to these attacks.

He said the United States continued to support the governments and people of the Lake Chad Basin region in their ongoing struggle to degrade and defeat Boko Haram.

“We support these efforts through a number of security and counterterrorism assistance programs, including intelligence, advisors, training, and equipment,” said Kirby.

“We look forward to expanding this support both bilaterally with the individual countries and to the Multinational Joint Task Force, which the Lake Chad Basin countries and Benin are in the process of standing up to coordinate their counter Boko Haram campaign.”
