Witchcraft: Court remands 2 house wives in prison

27 September 2013, 13:23

Birnin Kebbi - The Kebbi Sharia Court One, on Friday ordered two housewives, Habiba Ahmadu (40) and Maryam Ahmadu (23) to be remanded in prison custody for allegedly accusing an old woman of witchcraft.

The old woman, Hassana Abdulkarim had gone to the court asking it to punish the accused for labelling her a witch, thereby tarnishing her image in the eyes of the public.

The complainant who resides at the Sarakuna area of Birnin Kebbi, lodged a direct criminal complaint against the women, saying they had accused her of using witchcraft to cause harm to one of Maryam's daughters.

Abdulkarim told the court that Maryam, whose daughter was sick, was told by a native doctor that the complainant was the cause of the girl's sickness.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two women denied the allegation, and the the presiding officer, Alhaji Haruna Ibrahim, ordered them to be remanded in prison custody till October 2.

He said the decision was to allow tempers to cool in the community and for the case to be transferred to the Upper Shari'a Court, which has jurisdiction to entertain the case.
