Woman remanded over alleged murder of neighbour

26 January 2013, 07:23

Lagos - A Yaba Chief Magistrates' Court in Lagos on Friday remanded a business woman, Tawa Anifowose, at the Ikoyi Prisons over an alleged murder of her neighbour, Mary Adeola.

The Magistrate, M.O.Tanimole, ordered that Anifowose, 27, should be remanded in prison custody, pending legal advice from the state's Director of Public Prosecutions.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Adenike Abdul, said that the offence was committed on 16 January at No.27, Oregun St., Ikeja,Lagos.

She said that the accused and the deceased were neighbours and were reported to be engaging in frequent quarrels.

Abdul said that on the day of the incident, the deceased and Anifowose met at the well and an exchange of words started which degenerated into a fight.

The prosecutor said that Anifowose claimed that the deceased first slapped her and she retaliated by hitting Adeola on the chest with her elbow.

Abdul said that the deceased slumped, following the blow to the chest and was rushed to the hospital but later died that day.

She said that the offence contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

The court, however, did not take the plea of the defendant.

The magistrate adjourned the case to 17 February for mention.
